Anthony M. (Tony) Boccanfuso, Ph.D. is President of the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP – uidp.org), a US-based membership organization comprised of leading innovation companies and research universities.
Tony champions the UIDP’s singular focus on improving collaborations between the academic and corporate sectors. Tony’s career includes time in government at both the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health. He has also worked as a senior research administrator at several universities where he had direct responsibility for compliance, grants administration, incubators, industry engagement, intellectual property, and research strategy. Currently, he holds an appointment in the Provost’s Office at the University of South Carolina and regularly consults for government agencies, non-profit organizations and private firms and is Chair of the MedStar Health Research Institute. In recognition of his experience and insights in this arena, Tony is regularly sought after as a speaker (both domestically and internationally) and has published several reference sources on industry-academic engagement. Tony holds a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of South Carolina and earned his B.S. in Chemistry and Political Science from Furman University. Tony’s wife, Dr. Laura Boccanfuso, is a social robotics researcher at Yale, and they have three children, Carolina, a University of Alabama student, Michael a high school sophomore, and Ana a middle schooler.
