Get Involved with NEMODE (New Economic Models of the Digital Economy)

About NEMODE

NEMODE is an initiative under the Research Councils UK (RCUK)’s Digital Economy (DE) research program to bring together communities to explore new economic models in the Digital Economy. The project, which began in April 2012, has funding of £1.5 million over three years.

NEMODE focuses on New Economic Models, one of four RCUK DE Challenge Areas (the other three being IT as a Utility, Communities and Culture, and Sustainable Society). It aims to create a network of business people, academics and other experts who will identify and investigate the big research questions in new economic models that have arisen as a result of the digital economy’s fast-paced growth.

The project aims to inform policy on issues pertaining to the digital economy and engage with SMEs to stimulate new ideas and the creation of new markets. NEMODE will also inform business sectors and large companies about the changes necessary to enable them to take advantage of the opportunities created by today’s technologies.

The goal of the network is to deliver a virtual centre of excellence for the field to inform the development of policy.

NEMODE Activity

Our research outputs can be found on the NEMODE website: www.nemode.ac.uk.  Research generated to-date include case studies on:

  • Business Models in Electric Vehicle Ecosystems (Claire Weiller, University of Cambridge)
  • Economic Model Innovation in the Publishing Industry: Shifting the business model or the ecosystem? (PI: Ben Reid, The Work Foundation – Lancaster University)
  • New Economic Models for Regional News Organisations (François Nel, University of Central Lancashire)
  • Digital Technologies Enabling New Business Models in the Fashion Sector (PI: Luciano Batista, University of East Anglia)

Further research has been commissioned on:

  • Platforms for the Digital Economy: Emergence and Evolution of a New Economic Model (PI: Annabelle Gawer, Imperial College London)
  • Scale, Scope And Network Effects In Industry Platforms (Angel Salazar, Manchester Metropolitan University)

Opportunity for Involvement

We are establishing an internationally leading community of scholars whose research interest is in new economic models and their relationship to the digital economy. This community will engage in multiple forms of interaction and produce regular high profile media outputs as well as leading international research. It will produce evidence-based knowledge to address the following big questions:

○   What are the new economic models and in what contexts are different models appropriate?

○   What are the barriers to the development of these models and how can they be overcome?

○   How can businesses take advantage of the new opportunities emerging from the Digital Economy (DE)?

If your area of research interest falls in this space, we encourage your involvement no matter your location.  There is no cost in affiliation.  Simply visit www.NEMODE.ac.uk for more information and to sign up for regular updates.

Feature Article from our SIGs: Developing Curricula Guidelines for Service-related Education

Ralph Badinelli, ISSIP BOD Member and INFORMS Ambassador

The Education SIG of the International Society of Service Innovation Professionals (ISSIP) launched a research project to co-develop curricula guidelines for all forms of service-related education with educators, government agencies and industry representatives around the world. As a first step in this project, we produced a brief survey for the purpose of discovering the extant breadth and depth of service education and the needs for service education in the future. Specifically, we are interested in discovering

  • the breadth and depth of existing service-related educational programs,
  • the utility of existing service-related programs in serving the needs of service providers,
  • the institutional frameworks in which service-related education is provided,
  • the information resources that are in use in service-related education,
  • the future directions for service-related education.

We asked educators of all stripes and from around the world to complete this on-line survey. Results of this survey are posted on the ISSIP web site (www.ISSIP.org) in the form of a whitepaper.  We are pleased with the response rate that this survey stimulated and we plan follow-up surveys on the subject of service education in the future.

It is clear that education in service is in a state of rapid development in order to catch up with the needs of the burgeoning servitization that is taking place globally.  In keeping with ISSIP’s perspective of service as a co-creative endeavor and its view of education as a service, we will use the results of these surveys to engage members of the Education SIG in innovating approaches to educational programs in service-related topics.

New Publications: Designing Service Processes to Unlock Value by Dr. Joy M. Field

The service process design landscape is changing, with many of the previous limitations disappearing on how and who delivers services. Opportunities for new service design configurations are being supported, to a large extent, by technology-enabled innovations; many tasks performed by the service provider may now be performed by the customer. As a result, customers are playing a more active role in the service process, not only through self-service but also by providing information to the service provider to create a more personalized service experience. Designing Service Processes to Unlock Value explores how service processes can be designed to leverage the expanding range of opportunities for service providers and customers to co-create value.
