Stephen K. Kwan – Bio and Position Statement

Stephen KwanStephen K. Kwan is Professor Emeritus at San José State University (SJSU), USA. He was Lucas Professor of Service Science in the Lucas College of Business, founding chair of the MIS department and had served as the Senior Associate Dean and Associate Dean of the Graduate Programs in the College. Steve is very active in the SSMED community. He works closely with IBM on SSMED and had been the recipient of IBM Faculty Awards. He is a member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Committee on Education and is a member of The International Cooperation for Education about Standardization (ICES). He had also worked on projects with NSF, NIST, TOTVS, Sun Microsystems, Cisco, Microsoft, HP, the State of California, the US Army, etc. His current research interests include Global Trade in Services, Service Systems & Service Value Networks, Service Standards, and Design Thinking for Service System Innovation.

Stephen was the first ISSIP Ambassador to the Association of Information Systems (AIS). He has been a member of the organization since its inception in 1994 and initiated the Special Interest Group on Services (SIGSVC) there. Steve received a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. in Management from UCLA.

Position Statement

Having served ISSIP in the capacity of Advisor since its inception gives me a unique perspective on carrying forward the mission and objectives of ISSIP.   Under my leadership, in addition to supporting the ongoing projects of ISSIP and promote T-shaped Service Innovation Professionals, I will strive to grow ISSIP professional education programs and formalize a professional badging program for service innovators.
